Whether you’ve spent your whole life around computers, or you’re just a fan of The IT Crowd, you’re probably at least aware of the existence of Information Technology (IT) as a field. But maybe you’re unsure if it’s something you should pursue. If you fall into this latter category, we’ve got just the things for you — read on to learn more about IT and its job outlook in our latest industry spotlight, and then check out this great infographic on the need for skilled IT professionals, from our friends over at New Horizons!

What is information technology?

Information Technology refers to “the use of computer technology to manage information,” on everything from smartphones to televisions and including a wide range of subfields such as database development and data analysis. To quote from edX, “[every] time you download a song, stream a movie, check your email, or perform a web search, you’re accessing IT services.”

As you may have guessed, this means there are lots of different directions you can take within this field. For example, some of the programs we finance include Network Security Administrator, Microsoft Windows Server Network Engineer, and Certified Ethical Hacker.

What’s the outlook of information technology?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, IT as a field is expected to grow “13 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations.” And beyond even that, “the median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $84,580 in May 2017, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $37,690.”

How to enter the field of information technology

There are multiple educational avenues you can take to get your foot in the door to IT, whether you pursue a degree or need an alternative option. A bachelor’s — or even master’s — can be a great choice for many, but you may find you don’t have the time or the money to invest in a long-term degree. In that case, you might benefit from a shorter, less expensive option like those offered by some of the schools we work with for financing.
