Looking to the Future of VR and AR

By Darci Swisher, XR Terra

“XR will soon be a part of everyday life, making learning and mastering VR- and AR-related skills crucial,” according to Hakan Satiroglu, co-founder and chief executive officer of Climb partner XR Terra. “Almost every industry is going to be affected.”

The immense growth XR applications are already experiencing in industries like health care, retail, and manufacturing is expected to increase exponentially during the next decade. PwC estimates XR will contribute $1.5 trillion to the global GDP by 2030 — a figure released just before the coronavirus pandemic further spotlighted the importance of AR and VR.

Demand for those with cutting edge 3D skills is also growing quickly, and employers are paying a premium to fill these undersupplied positions, according to “Visualizing the Future,” a joint report from Epic Games and Burning Glass Technologies.

Satiroglu co-founded XR Terra in 2019 to provide industry-driven educational and training programs that prepare students to be at the forefront of the XR industry. The Boston-based start-up’s primary offerings target software developers and engineers and visual designers, with additional courses for business professionals and high school students.

The 12-week AR & VR Developer Program introduces the Unity platform — XR Terra is a Unity Authorized Training and Certification Partner — and covers Unity audio, video, animation, and particle effects. Students will also receive a foundation in AR and VR, cases, and trends, and gain project management and prototyping skills for both applications. With portfolios and expertise in product pitches and presentations, they will be prepared for careers on XR-focused software development teams as AR and VR software engineers and developers, Unity developers, AR mobile application developers and gameplay programmers.

The AR & VR Visual Design Program is also 12 weeks, and gives graphic designers, 3D modelers and artists the skills and experience needed for roles as UI, UX, and product designers and in production. In addition to Unity UI, the curriculum covers all aspects of UX and UI for AR and VR, including storyboarding and wireframing, AR and VR prototyping, and UX and UI for 2D and 3D projects.

“These are the most rigorous programs in the market globally for this stage of learning,” Satiroglu said. “We will continuously stay ahead of the curve to build the necessary long and short courses, technical courses, and business courses for people whose goal is a career in XR.”
